Accountability

The first lesson to learn - with every job comes responsibility.  If you don’t want the responsibility, don’t take the job.  Second, if you hold someone accountable, make sure they live up to it.  If your commitment is to grow the company, make sure your management team has the accountability, responsibility and authority to make quick, informed decisions in a tough, competitive marketplace.  Give them the autonomy with direction and support to get the job done using their tactics.  Your management team will never fully develop if you inflict your personality and tactics as to how they need to perform their responsibilities.  They need to develop their own methods and will excel when their ideas and talent is valued and their contributions are rewarded.  When you hold employees accountable, you help them succeed.  The key is delegation.  Give them enough rope to metaphorically speaking hang themselves.   Lessons are learned best by your own hands.  Spend time to develop your employee’s potential; it's your best investment.
