WebSphere Application Server Offerings

One of the more prominent commercial application servers on the market today is the WebSphere Application Server from IBM.  There are five entry points to the WebSphere Application Server suite.

WebSphere Application Server Community Edition
WAS-CE is a free open source application server that does not share the same code base as the other WebSphere application servers; a WAS-CE migration path does exist.

WebSphere Application Server Express
This low cost entry point shares the same code base as its more robust siblings (Base, ND, XD) but does not include clustering.  Basic license supports a single server with 480 PVUs and one development license.

WebSphere Application Server Base
Includes the same capabilities as WAS Express except it is licensed to be installed on an unlimited number of CPUs and servers, supports additional hardware platforms such as z/OS.

WebSphere Application Server Network Deployment
Provides all the capabilities of  WAS Base plus clustering, load balancing and high availability services for those business requirements that require a 24x7 operations.

WebSphere Application Server Extended Deployment
Provides all the WAS-ND features plus extended management capabilities to administer large WAS clusters, and allows for the dynamic virtualization of resources and workloads between pools of application servers.
