3 ways to participate in National Cyber Security Awareness Month
“Cyberspace is woven into the fabric of our daily lives and the world is more interconnected today than ever before. We enjoy the benefits and convenience that cyberspace provides as we shop from home online, bank using our smart phones, and interact with friends from around the world through social networks.”

Those were the words used by the Department of Homeland Security when talking about its commitment to raise cyber-security awareness. And that commitment is especially apparent during the month of October, which 10 years ago was deemed National Cyber Security Awareness Month.

Privacy is one of the most basic of human rights, and because of the actions of a few, the concern for many has increased. By engaging the general public in activities related to creating a safe and secure cyber environment, the resiliency of our cyber infrastructure can only improve.

To get involved, there are events happening all over the United States during the month of October. The full schedule of those events can be found on the StaySafeOnline.org website. Or, to participate in educational seminars from afar, here are a few online events taking place in the upcoming weeks, courtesy of the National Cyber Security Alliance:

1. DDoS Awareness Day – Oct 23, 2013

Neustar is hosting a worldwide educational summit to raise awareness of DDoS (distributed denial of service) attacks and how they impact businesses around the world. With speakers from industry, government and the "dark side" of hacking, this online event focuses on overall education, identification and protection against these disruptive attacks like those against U.S. banks over the past year. 2. The Cyber Threat Summit – Oct 24, 2013

The Cyber Threat Summit 2013 is an ambitious undertaking by the International Cyber Threat Task Force (ICTTF) to run a virtual global summit on cyber threats. The summit will commence in New Zealand and end in Hawaii, with more than 50 speakers presenting on the cyber threat landscape to delegates from more than 100 countries. Registration is free at http://www.cyberthreatsummit.com/2013/.

3. CoNetrix Social Media Training Webinar – Oct 30, 2013

As a part of National Cyber Security Awareness Month (NCSAM), CoNetrix is pleased to sponsor a complimentary educational event on Social Media on October 30, 2013. This session will discuss the security, technology, marketing, and compliance concerns related to Social Media, with particular attention to Facebook. We will look at how companies are currently utilizing social media and review the risk management and policy controls companies should be considering related to these types of sites. We will also examine recent guidance released by the FFIEC related to Social Media. To register visit https://www.conetrix.com/register-webinar.aspx?webinar=567.

Regardless of the month, the topic of security is important to the general public just as it’s important to those who oversee an eCommerce website. In fact, we recently posted a blog about how to make customers feel more secure when making purchases on an eCommerce website. The placement of security icons near credit card form fields is just one way to instill confidence in site visitors. To learn more, read the blog or feel free to talk to the team at NetSphere Strategies, who would be happy to put you and your customers' minds at ease.
